It's official: new test comics
Beginning Monday you'll see "Candorville" and "Daddy's Home" in the test center.
I'm shortening the tests to 1 month. 2 months was OK, and 3 was definitely too long. I get most of the feedback in the first 4 weeks, so I'll stick to a month. Don't be shy in sharing your thoughts - here or via e-mail (dena.rosenberry@gazette.com).

Do not like either Daddy's Home or Candorville trial comics. I did like Agnes very much!
At leasty Agnes was a little philosophical and had some humor. Neither Daddy's Home nor Candorvilleare have subtle humor, nor does Diesel Sweeties. Insofar as For Better or Worse is concerned, at least some of us can relate to it.
First anonymous, are you saying after 1 or 2 days that you don't like a comic strip?
I enjoy "Agnes." So far most folks who don't seem to be the same folks who ask us to bring back comics from decades ago. Which is what I expected.
Some readers will relate to "Daddy's Home," others to "Candorville" or "Diesel Sweeties" and still others to "For Better or For Worse." I just don't like paying premium for reruns.
And before you mention "Peanuts," find a comic that kids like as much as "Peanuts" and I'll consider swapping!
get rid of FBOFW it's a hollow shelll of its former self!
Cul de sac is the answer!
You hit my weak spot: Cul De Sac!!
Daddy's Home is pretty damn funny. What say the Gazette gives that a whirl?! BTW, on this blog, it is not apparent that this survey is for the CS Gazette. You should probably link it to the paper, no?
Yes. Daddys Home please.
I totally agree Dena! No more reruns. I'll take any of the new strips over reruns. That said, I disagree with anon. I think Daddy's Home has both lol and subtle humor... and yes I have read more than 3 cartoons. I like Cul D. as well, but prefer DH. THANKS for your efforts Dena!
Ok, so it's only been 3 days, but don't think new comics (either) are funny. Did like Agnes .....
If you think it's too soon to comment, why do you ask for them????
Well, I'm not going to turn on/off the comments function or change the message on top of the comics page each day.
Just seems to me it's difficult to get a feel for a comic - unless it's a gag strip - until you've read it for at least a week or two.
Daddy's home is good, I agree. Cul De Sac is good too. So is Argyle. So, 1... Daddy's Home, 2... Argyle, 3... Cul De Sac, in that order.
I say 1. Cul De Sac 2. Argyle 3. F-Minus
I think F minus is very inconsistent. It's not worth putting up with the unfunny ones just so you can get 1 funny one every 2 weeks. Daddy's Home is pretty consistent and funny. I think Argyle is hit or miss too. He swings for the bleachers every day and ends up striking out a lot as a result. Daddy's Home is my pick. I urge my fellow bloggers to keep reading it. I've been following it for a few months. It grows on ya. In a good way, not like a fungus.
I like Daddy's Home and did not care for Agnes.
I like Agnes but did not care for Daddy's Home.
I have suffered through most of your test comics, reading them. Then we come to Daddy's Home and Candorville. Where did you find these rotten comics? Yes, I read them and am more grossed out every day. YUCK! Don't put us through 8 weeks more of them. DUMP THEM NOW!
I must strongly disagree. Daddy's home is funny and different. Keep it around please. Thank you.
PS. Why do certain of you (you know who you are) have to be so mean about your opinions? It's just as easy to give your opinion without insulting Dena and/or everyone else on the blog. Anger issues?
Daddy's Home can be funny, but it's bland and the characters aren't interesting. Candorville is pretty sharply written, though the art's unexciting. But I like Candorville. And Agnes. And Cul De Sac.
I like Anges' humor. She usually makes a point. As for the other newbiew, I don't particularly care for them.
WHile reading Daddy's Home gold coins started pouring out of mouth. And that nasty rash cleared up .. is there anything you can't do Daddy's Home?
I don't think so.
Hello, I thought I would throw in my two cents about the test comics. I actually only buy the paper for the comics (I might add the Gazette has one of the biggest comics sections I've seen). I skim the front sections eating breakfast and then sit down and enjoy the comics. I also have 5 kids that read the comics, so this is 6 people talking (wife doesn't read them).
* We don't like F-Minus (whacked) or Candorville.
* We do like Daddy's Home, and Family Tree.
* Cul de sac and agnes are okay. Get a laugh sometimes.
* Have you thought of trying Marvin?
Thanks for adding your comments, especially since you have kids reading the pages, too. I don't know if we've ever run or tested Marvin. What strips are your kids' favorites?
Yeah. I like Daddy's Home too. I'd like to see more of it. Argyle is OK too. But I like DH if I have to pick just one. Do I?
I enjoy Daddy's Home! Thanks for taking the time to ask, BTW.
I don't care for either Daddy's Homne or Candorille. However, I do like For Better or For Worse, and have followed it for years. Please don't drop it.
I like Agnes and Daddy's Home.
But the comic I really can't stand is Diesel Sweeties.
What about Broom Hilda? I always liked her.
Broom Hilda! Wow... I haven't seen that in a while. Never was a big fan though. Not really into Agnes. Daddy's Home seems pretty good. Diesel Sweeties... not bad. Could get old fast though.
Of all the test comics you've run, I like Candorville the best. I followed it in the LA times when we lived in So Cal (I'm not sure if the times still runs it), and have missed it since moving to COS. I enjoy Candorville's gentle satire of culture, society, and politics. It also provides some well-needed racial diversity and perhaps a minor political balance to the editorial page :-) While we're on that topic, any chance of carrying Doonesbury?
Thanks for all the comments so far! Apparently we ran Doonesbury some years ago (6+). It was gone by the time I got here about 4.5 years ago. I get a fair amount of requests for it - and about the same number of warnings (carry it and I cancel!). I can't rule it out. There's no denying the quality in that strip.
Candorville wasn't that good to begin with and now it's just a soapbox for the writer's political opinions. Much like Non Sequitur, it doesn't belong in the comics section.
